What is Zumba?

We have been noticing more and more people coming into out shop who are taking Zumba classes.  They all seem to be super-enthusiastic about Zumba, so we thought we should feature it, in case some of you aren’t aware of this growing trend, or “revolution” as some put it.
According to Wikipedia:
“A Zumba workout mixes body sculpting movements with dance steps derived from cumbia, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, hip hop, mambo, rumba, flamenco, and calypso and Salsaton. The routines feature
aerobic interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms. It targets areas such as the glutes, legs, arms, abdominals, and the heart. A Zumba class is typically not formulaic in that instructors often add on their own music choices and choreographies to make their class presentation locally unique.”

Seattle Salsa Congress

Today is the last day of the Seattle Salsa Congress, and I have to say that I am impressed with what I have seen so far. Hundreds of people have come from far and wide to attend this event that is packed full of fine instructors and general Salsa goodness. If you haven’t been yet, you still have a chance! The Seattle Salsa Congress will be going all day long with many workshops to choose from, and tonight there will be performances by world class dancers and social dancing until 2AM.

This is what the organizers have said about this year’s event:
“We’ve taken all your feedback from last year, threw it into a blender, and concocted a salsa hot enough to burn your tongue off. Everything has been taken to the next level: Better sound system, higher staging, only the finest performances, and workshop instructors…well, I think they speak for themselves. From Edie’s bootcamp (teaching more in 3 days than most students learn in 3 years) to 5-Time World Champions, Oliver & Luda. And every one of our instructors are stars in their own right.”

Who is Salsa Dance Intructor Jim Chow?

Keep reading to learn more about how you could win dance lessons with Jim

Over the last few years, Salsa has become a full-blown dance craze, and there is a lot going on right here in Seattle. You can in fact go salsa dancing almost every night of the week. But what if you don’t know how to salsa dance or perhaps lack the confidence to break out on the dance floor? Well, that’s where instructors like Jim Chow come in.

Jim Chow Salsa Intructor and Performer in Seattle

To Jim, Salsa is more than just dance moves. It is playful, dramatic, sensual and flirtatious. Jim was introduced to Salsa
in 1999, and within a short period of time, he was addicted and was dancing at the professional level. His background as a successful national artist and Kung Fu master helps him to correctly identify body movement and body language, and he is exceptional at sharing with his students accurate cues and directions for better footwork, patterns and styling.

In addition to offering regular classes, Jim has contributed a lot to the Salsa community by creating exciting opportunities for his students to expand and showcase what they have learned within an intimate competition setting, and he also organizes dance “field trips” both locally and not-so-locally through the Salsa Meetup, which is a resource open to the general public for dancers to socialize and make friends in salsa. It’s all about great people, great community and great dancing!

Centerstage is proud to announce that on September 1, 2008, we will be holding a drawing for a $60 certificate for a 5-week series with Jim Chow.

Dance School Directory

We get asked all the time about dance schools, and so we have added a Dance School Directory to our site. This is by no means a complete list and really is a work in progress, but hopefully it’s a good start to what we hope will be a useful resource to the community. If you have information about a school that isn’t listed here, feel free to submit the information to centerstagedance (at) qwest.net . The scope for this site will be limited to Western Washington, but it does include all types of dance. Thanks in advance for your input!

Mediterranean Fantasy Festival July 2007

July hosts a great tradition for the bellydance community here in Seattle, and this year it will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. The Babylonian Ensemble presents the Mediterranean Fantasy Festival–or MedFest as it is lovingly called by its devotees. The festival features two solid days of bellydance performance, an outdoor market (Centerstage will be there) with all things bellydance and more, Middle Eastern cuisine and bellydance workshops. This outdoor festival is free and open to the public, and it makes for great family fun!

Brenda Bufalino coming to town: Make Your Move! celebrating National Dance Week, April 20-29, 2007

Bainbridge Island will play host to Make Your Move! celebrating National Dance Week© April 20-29, 2007. We are thrilled to have Brenda Bufalino join us in celebration. She will be conducting three workshops over the weekend and Perform at our Look Who’s Dancing Showcase Performance on Saturday afternoon. In addition to Brenda’s specially priced workshops, participants will be able to choose from over 15 free workshops ranging from swing-salsa-line dance – clogging, folks, and more!

Saturday, Brenda will be conducting an Adv.Beginning workshop from 11am-12:30pm . After her workshop, participants and/or parents may want to consider taking-in any of the free workshops happening that day up until 3pm. Doors will open at 3pm for the Showcase Performance where local and visiting dance artists join Brenda in a Celebration of Dance. After a dinner break, for the strong, we have a Let’s Dance! community dance from 7pm-9pm.

Sunday, Brenda will be conducting two back to back workshops for Int.Adv.Students. Students will have a chance to work with her ATDO repertory and then work with a live musician in exploring tap as an integral part of music.

Many of the workshops and performance venues are within walking distance, or a short cab ride (2 miles) from the ferry, so walking on the ferry is definitely feasible.

Brenda is also offering her book, “Tapping the Source,” at wholesale to Dance Studios and Stores. We just received a supply and would be happy to deliver to your store. Wholesale price is $17, Retails for for $25.
