The Voyage of Ra: A Journey through Egyptian Music & Dance Oct 4, 2008

Get ready to be transported. In this show, you will journey through the dances and music of Egypt from the times of antiquity to today as Ra has traversed the blue and starry skies for an eternity. Show time is 8pm, October 4, at the Seattle Art Museum auditorium.

Like the ancient Egyptian sun god who journeyed around the world daily and manifested himself as a variety of ancient deities, this event will showcase a variety of Egyptian dances from folkloric, to classic oriental, to cabaret, to contemporary fusion.

Here are a few highlights to look for in the lineup: the Egyptian combat dance, the taktib (stick), though in this case less fierce and more flirtatious as the women’s raks assaya (cane dance); the dance of the famous Egyptian dancing gypsy tribes, the Ghawazee; and the shamadan dance – a dance in which the performer dances with a fully lit candelabrum adorning her head. However, rather than the traditional singular dancer, you can expect to see a shimmering quartet at SAM!

Additional highlights will include a Middle Eastern dance-Bob Fosse (jazz) fusion, a guest appearance by local Flamenco artists Savannah Fuentes and Rubina Carmona, and live Middle Eastern music by House of Tarab and George Sadak.
